Communication trends of 2020

What changed about how we communicate

2020
Delivery 98% | Engagement 77%
In 2020, Grammarly users paid more attention to the wording and tone they used.
As we navigated a year when everything felt fraught, they put extra effort into not only what they said but also how they said it.
The first wave of the pandemic | Informative Up | Optimistic Down
Optimistic and informative tones took on an inverse relationship in March, as COVID-19 cases began to rise in the US and Europe.
Grammarly users writing to inform expressed less optimism than they had previously.
May-June spike | Formal down 91%
In the fall, Grammarly users shifted in a more casual direction. Formal writing decreased 91% compared to January.
We did, however, observe a couple of spikes in formality over the course of the year — one in late May and early June during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, and another in late August and early September.
Confident down 43%
The uncertainty of 2020 touched so many parts of our lives, and writing was no exception.
By October, Grammarly users' writing sounded 43% less confident than it had in January.
